When your mobile is on it sends a signal to the nearest transmitter periodically, so the rough area can be easily identified by the mobile phone company. This info can be shared with the police with a court order. For anything more accurate you need quite sophisticated equipment that can triangulate your position and that is very precise. However, the authorities would need a good reason to do this and it is very expensive. Hence why it is not often used to track missing persons. mobilspionage.de
